Rekindling Love and Adventure: Our First Recreational Trip Together to Denver, Colorado

Updated: May 2

A Rocky Start That Led to an Unforgettable Journey

Every couple needs a moment to step away — to catch their breath, soak in new surroundings, and remember why they chose each other. Our Denver trip started exactly that way: with excitement, a few bumps, and ultimately, unforgettable memories stitched into our story forever.

We arrived in Denver early Thursday morning — around 6:30 AM — bleary-eyed but buzzing with anticipation. Before even heading to our hotel, we followed a local tip and stopped at the Moonlight Diner, just a short drive away. The place had a charming, old-school feel and a reputation for homey, satisfying meals. We could instantly tell it had been part of Denver’s story for a long time. Over plates of hot, delicious breakfast — the kind that tastes like someone’s grandma made it — we kicked off our trip with full bellies and happy hearts.

From there, we wandered toward downtown for a slow, hand-in-hand stroll across the shimmering Millennium Bridge, the city skyline brushing against the clouds above us. There, tucked away like a little secret, we discovered Tao Boba — and instantly fell in love with their creamy, dreamlike yogurt drinks. It felt like the universe had already started whispering magic into our weekend.

But life — and travel — sometimes have other plans.

Friday’s Detour: Finding Rest in the Midst of Disappointment

By Friday morning, I found myself grounded in a hotel bed, battling what felt like a nasty 24-hour flu or a bad cold. The vibrant streets of Denver continued on without us, and my heart ached at the thought of losing a day we had so carefully carved out for each other.

Still, there was grace in the pause. Jerry stayed by my side, reminding me that not every adventure needs a full itinerary — sometimes, the quiet moments of care and patience are the ones that truly heal.

Saturday’s Renewal: Mountain Roads and Sweet Nostalgia

Snow-capped Rocky Mountains seen from Denver, Colorado — a breathtaking view captured by a couple from Minneapolis, Minnesota during their spring getaway.

Waking up Saturday, I felt renewed, almost as if the crisp Colorado air had called me back to life. Our hearts knew where we needed to go: the mountains.

Driving through the winding roads toward Estes Park, windows down, hair wild in the breeze, we were once again swept up in the breathtaking beauty that made us fall for Colorado years ago. Our goal: visit the iconic Stanley Hotel, famously known from The Shining.

What we didn’t realize? We had already been there almost two years before — during the very first trip we ever took together with the real estate team that introduced us. Life had come full circle.

Lunch at the Stanley was simple and perfect: Jerry savored one of the best cheeseburgers he’s ever had, while I kept it light with a grilled chicken salad, already dreaming about the creamy ice cream awaiting us downstairs at the Cherry Company.

The drive back wasn't as dramatically mountainous, but as we rolled past small towns and familiar roads, we reminisced about who we were then and who we were becoming now. A quick Sprouts run for snacks led us back to our hotel to rest, connect, and hold space for each other.

Sunday’s Magic: Science, Brunch, and a Taste of Morocco

Sunday unfolded with wonder and learning. We wandered through the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, marveling at North America's vast wildlife displays. One story stuck with us: how a museum volunteer’s fresh perspective on fossils led to the discovery of thousands of new pieces, forever changing what we know about ancient life. It was a beautiful reminder — sometimes, all it takes is a new way of seeing.

Brunch at Corrine Denver was next. With its chic, cozy patio that transported us to a hidden corner of New York City, and a brunch menu that had our taste buds swooning, it instantly became a place we knew we'd dream about for years.

Dinner swept us away even further — this time into the rich, aromatic world of Morocco at a local spot hailed for its authentic cuisine. The flavors exploded in ways we didn’t expect. The baklava? Pure heaven — flaky, buttery, with just the right kiss of sweetness.

Monday’s Gentle Goodbye: Gardens and Poutine Dreams

Monday morning, our last hours in Denver begged for something peaceful. We chose the Denver Botanic Gardens — a living dream of colorful blooms, secret nooks, and gentle paths that let us breathe and reflect. It felt like closing a beautiful chapter with grace.

And of course, before boarding our plane back to reality, there was one last treat: poutine from Revival Denver. Rich, savory, and utterly indulgent — it was the perfect ending to a weekend that had already filled our hearts beyond measure.

More Than a Denver Trip: A Reflection of Us

Minneapolis, Minnesota couple enjoying a sunny spring day at the Denver Botanic Gardens during their Colorado getaway.

Our Denver trip wasn’t just a getaway; it was a mirror. It reflected back to us the growth we’ve worked so hard for — in ourselves, in our love, and in the family we're nurturing together.

We faced illness, small conflicts, and unexpected turns with tenderness and grace. We used quiet moments between adventures to reflect on the last quarter of our relationship, to dream bigger for our future, and to recommit to healing — with ourselves, with each other, and with our beautiful sons.

In a world that often demands so much, this trip reminded us that sometimes the most important journeys are the ones that lead us home to each other.
